Enovix new 3D Silicon™ Lithium-ion batteries are disrupting the Li-ion battery industry in terms of energy, power density and safety. Traditional Li-ion batteries are used in nearly all mobile devices today but have seen little improvement Y/Y in energy density over the last 30 years and almost no improvement in safety. If you compare that to other components in mobile devices, such as CPU clock speeds, storage, mobile phone camera resolution and cellular network speed, we can see how much faster other components have improved.
Enovix has developed a breakthrough 3D Silicon™ Lithium-ion battery architecture that delivers more energy, power density and safety than conventional Li-ion batteries, and that can enable new experiences for consumers. With silicon anodes, a battery can store up to twice the energy density of graphite anodes; however, 100 % silicon anodes have exhibited four key problems that Enovix has solved.
The Enovix architecture addresses these four main challenges:
- Managing first charge expansion by reorienting electrodes to face the small side of the battery and using a thin constraint system to limit battery swelling.
- Increase first charge efficiency by battery pre-lithiation to replenish lithium lost during formation.
- Managing cycle swelling by limiting it to less than 2% through an engineered pressure on silicon particles.
- Improving cycle life by keeping particles under constant stack pressure. The 3D cell architecture enables silicon anodes to achieve the commercial cycling standard of 500 complete charge/discharge cycles to 80% remaining capacity.
Enovix replaces the traditional "jelly roll" design with a precise, laser-cut stack of anodes, separators, and cathodes that solves the problem improves packing efficiency, thermal performance, and abuse tolerance. Furthermore, Enovix's BrakeFlow™ Technology also significantly increases abuse tolerance by preventing thermal runaway compared to a conventional lithium-ion battery. When a battery is pierced or severely damaged, a short can occur, discharging the cell in microseconds and potentially releasing a violent and often fiery chain reaction. BrakeFlow™ will regulate current flux from other areas of the battery to the short, thus limiting the short area from overheating and inhibiting thermal runaway.
